Odoo vs Dynamics 365 Business Central: an honest comparison for mid-market buyers
Business Central is Microsoft’s ERP for small and mid-sized organizations: a service on Azure, changed by AL extensions rather than by editing the base application. Odoo is a suite you host yourself and extend by inheritance. Every claim below cites Microsoft’s own documentation, including the rows it wins.
Business Central is Microsoft’s cloud ERP for small and mid-sized organizations, run as a multitenant service on Azure with an on-premises deployment available, and extended in AL. Odoo is a suite in two editions with three hosting options, where you hold the source.
Microsoft-standardized companies. The Teams, Outlook, Excel, Power BI and Power Automate integrations are first-party and documented by Microsoft, and so is the release calendar: two major updates a year, every April and October.
When you want to own the code and choose where the database runs, when the hard part is operations rather than the ledger, and when you would rather inherit from a module you hold than extend one you do not.
Brainvire is an Odoo Gold Partner and does not resell Business Central. Our Microsoft practice does cover Dynamics 365, Business Central included, but we publish no Business Central case study. Every claim here cites Microsoft’s documentation, and the rows it wins are named rather than argued around.
/ First, what is actually different
Are you comparing two products, or two ways of changing one?
Both cover a wide suite. What separates them is who holds the base application.
One service, two release waves
Microsoft runs Business Central online as a multitenant service on Azure, with major updates every April and October, and documents an on-premises deployment for those who need one.
Two editions, three ways to host
Community is open source under LGPL version 3; Enterprise adds the licensed apps. Either runs on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers, and each major version is supported for three years.
Extension model, or inheritance
Business Central changes through AL extension objects that add or override, and subscribers to events in the base application. Odoo changes through modules that inherit a model or view, over source you can read.
What you are really choosing
How much of the platform, the calendar and the code you want to hold, against how much one vendor should carry for you.

/ Criterion by criterion
How do Odoo and Business Central compare on the criteria that decide it?
Ten criteria, no commercial terms. Three of them go to Business Central.
| Criterion | Odoo | Business Central |
|---|---|---|
| Product shape | Odoo: one suite in two editions, Community and Enterprise, on a yearly major version you choose when to take. | Business Central: Microsoft calls it a cloud-based ERP solution for small and mid-sized organizations, launched in April 2018 and sold as one product line. |
| Hosting | Odoo: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on-premise, in your own cloud account or data center, with the same major version underneath all three. | Business Central: primarily a service Microsoft runs on Azure over Azure SQL Database, with an on-premises Setup documented separately. |
| Source access | Odoo: Community is licensed under LGPL version 3, so the core is yours to read, change and keep. | Business Central: the System Application is open-source modules you can contribute to, but the Base Application is Microsoft’s. You extend it; you do not hold it. |
| Release calendar | Odoo: each major version is supported for three years, and you decide when to take one unless you are on Odoo Online. | Business Central: two major updates a year, every April and October, with a five-month update period and a maintenance window per environment. Business Central wins this row. |
| Microsoft 365 and Power Platform | Odoo: reaches Microsoft tools through an external API that Odoo limits to the Custom plan. Built, not bundled. | Business Central: an app for Microsoft Teams, an Outlook add-in, an Excel add-in, Power BI report parts and Power Automate flows, all first-party. Business Central wins this row, and it is not close. |
| How you change it | Odoo: inheritance — a module inherits a model or a view, overrides what it needs and calls the parent method. Studio covers fields, views, automation rules and reports without code. | Business Central: the AL extension model. Table and page extension objects add or override, subscribers catch events published in the base application, and it compiles to a .app package. Editing the Base Application source is an on-premises-only path Microsoft recommends against. |
| What on-premises gives up | Odoo: what changes on-premise is the upgrade obligation, not the feature set: mandatory every two years on Odoo Online, optional on-premise. | Business Central: Microsoft publishes what on-premises does not get, including the developer sandbox, automatic Power BI report deployment and Power Automate template workflows. It cannot install Marketplace apps at all. |
| Reach and partner channel | Odoo: fiscal localization modules cover 103 countries and install automatically from the company’s country, 45 with their own documentation page, and one partner is usually accountable throughout. | Business Central: Microsoft lists 241 countries and regions where it is available, localizing 24 itself and leaving partners to build the other 217. Business Central wins this row on channel reach. |
| What the suite covers | Odoo: accounting, sales, CRM, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, project, HR and payroll, helpdesk, field service, website and eCommerce on one database. | Business Central: finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehouse, fixed assets, planning, assembly, manufacturing, projects, service and human resources, plus a built-in Shopify connector. Breadth does not decide this one. |
| Integration interfaces | Odoo: an external API, but only on the Custom plan — Odoo documents that it is not available on One App Free or Standard. Direct database access when you host it yourself. | Business Central: OData and SOAP web services, a standard REST API, and near-real-time Dataverse sync — how it reaches Dynamics 365 Sales and anything on Power Apps. |
Business Central rows follow learn.microsoft.com, Odoo rows the Odoo 19 docs, both checked 11 September 2026. No commercial terms here: see Odoo licensing explained.
/ The call
Which one fits your situation?
Four situations we meet repeatedly. Two end with Business Central, and we say so in the working session.
Your finance team already lives in Microsoft 365
If approvals happen in Teams, reporting in Power BI and every schedule arrives as an Excel file, Business Central meets your team where it stands.
You want a published calendar and a partner nearby
Two major updates a year, April and October, on an estate Microsoft operates, in 241 countries and regions.
You want the source, the database and the calendar
Community is LGPL version 3, and either edition runs on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers. When the risk register asks who holds the code, you answer with your name.
The hard part is operations, not the ledger
Manufacturing, field service, point of sale and a storefront on one database with accounting. Puma Energy runs a twelve-country network that way.
/ The evaluation, in order
How should you run the evaluation?
Four stages, a named owner at each, a recommendation in writing at the end. If Odoo wins, delivery runs 8 to 12 weeks for small rollouts, 12 to 24 weeks mid-market, 6 to 12 months enterprise — our own planning figures, not Odoo published ones.
List what must live in one system
The processes that cannot sit outside the ERP, the entities you consolidate, the countries you file in. That list separates the two better than any grid.
Take your five worst gaps to both
Not a demo script — your own order-to-cash and month-end close. Record each gap as configuration, an AL extension, an Odoo module or a process change.
Settle hosting, control and the keys
Where the database runs, who holds the backups, who applies updates, who answers when it fails. Those answers differ sharply and outlast the build.
Ask for like-for-like proposals, decide in writing
Same users, entities, gaps and hosting to both partners. You get a written recommendation, including the case for Business Central where it is stronger.
/ Total cost of ownership
What actually drives the cost of either system?
The license line is rarely the one that moves. Four drivers do most of the work, and your operation decides all four.
Who logs in, and how many books
User count moves the number on both sides. So does every legal entity: a chart mapping, an intercompany rule set, a close routine.
Configuration, extension, or code
A gap closed by configuration is cheap on either platform. Beyond that they diverge: an AL extension is a build with its own release calendar; an Odoo module is a build over source you keep.
How much comes across
Open items and master data is a contained job. Years of history, reconciled and provable to an auditor, is its own project.
Operations, not just the build
On Business Central online, Microsoft runs the platform and updates land twice a year. On Odoo you choose Odoo.sh, your cloud or your servers, with backups, monitoring and someone on call.
Ask both partners for the same users, entities, gaps and hosting. Anything else is two projects wearing one name.
/ Odoo, on the record
Where has Odoo carried this kind of scope?
Three Brainvire programs of the shape buyers take to a Business Central partner. We publish no Business Central case study and would rather say so than imply one.
12countries on one standardized Odoo 18 corePuma Energy
A multi-country, multi-entity ERP and Point of Sale platform for a convenience-store network: country fiscal localization on a mergeable group chart of accounts, group-wide consolidation, 87.5% faster dealer onboarding, and a POS that sells through outages.

/ The decision table
Odoo or Business Central: which should you choose?
Six criteria that settle it. Two rows describing you make Business Central the answer.
| Criterion | Choose Business Central when | Choose Odoo when |
|---|---|---|
| Your existing stack | The company runs on Microsoft 365, and Teams, Excel and Power BI are where work happens | You are not standardized on one vendor’s stack |
| Where the difficulty sits | Finance is the system of record and operations are near standard | Manufacturing, field service, point of sale or eCommerce is where the awkward work lives |
| Control | You would rather Microsoft held the platform, the calendar and the code | You want source access, hosting of your choosing and freedom to change partner |
| How your gaps get closed | Your gaps fit AL extension objects and event subscribers | You would rather inherit from the module, and on Community change the code itself |
| Change cadence | You would rather take two release waves a year than own a version decision | You choose when to take a major version, and can skip a year that is already busy |
| Who is accountable | The deeper partner bench in the countries you file in is a Microsoft one | You want one partner accountable for build and run, in one contract |
Choose Business Central when the Microsoft stack is the spine. Choose Odoo when you want to hold the code. Also see what Odoo is, Community vs Enterprise, Odoo vs NetSuite, Odoo vs SAP Business One and Odoo ERP migration.
/ Questions we are asked
Odoo vs Dynamics 365 Business Central FAQs.
What is the difference between Odoo and Dynamics 365 Business Central?
The difference that matters is how you change them. Microsoft describes Business Central as a cloud ERP for small and mid-sized organizations, changed through AL extensions that add or override objects and subscribe to events in the base application. Odoo's modules inherit instead.
Is Business Central better than Odoo?
For some buyers, yes, and we say so. Business Central is stronger when your company already runs on Microsoft 365, because the Teams, Outlook, Excel, Power BI and Power Automate integrations are first-party and documented by Microsoft. It is also stronger when you want a published release calendar.
How does customization differ between Odoo and Business Central?
Business Central uses an extension model: AL objects, table and page extension objects that add or override, and event subscribers against base-application codeunits, compiled into a .app package. Editing the Base Application source is an on-premises-only path Microsoft recommends against. Odoo uses inheritance over source you can hold.
Can we host Odoo or Business Central ourselves?
Odoo documents three hosting options: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise in your own cloud account or data center. Business Central is primarily a service Microsoft runs on Azure, with an on-premises Setup available. Microsoft publishes what on-premises loses, including Marketplace apps, sandbox environments and automatic Power BI deployment.
What happens at upgrade time on Odoo and Business Central?
Business Central has two major update cycles a year, every April and October, with a five-month update period and a one-month grace period; administrators reschedule inside that window and set a maintenance window. Odoo supports each major version for three years, and requires upgrading every two years on Odoo Online.
Does Business Central integrate with Microsoft 365 better than Odoo?
Yes, and it is not a close row. Microsoft documents a Business Central app for Teams that expands a record link into a card colleagues can edit in the conversation, an Outlook add-in, an Excel add-in, built-in Power BI report parts and Power Automate flows. Odoo uses its external API, which Odoo limits to the Custom plan and does not offer on One App Free or Standard.
Is Odoo a real alternative to Business Central for a mid-market company?
Yes, on the right scope. Brainvire runs Odoo across twelve countries for Puma Energy's convenience-store network and across nine departments for a Singapore deep-tech manufacturer. What decides it is shape rather than headcount: how much of the operation must sit on one database, and how much source you want to hold.
Can we move from Business Central to Odoo?
Yes, and it is a re-implementation rather than an upgrade, because Odoo's upgrade service explicitly does not cover migrating from another ERP. Your chart of accounts, dimensions, master data, open items and the history an auditor needs are mapped in, and each AL extension is re-scoped as configuration or a module.
