Odoo ERP for Electronics & Machinery: one system for the whole operation
Odoo ships no electronics or machinery module. It ships Manufacturing, Inventory, Quality, PLM and Field Service, which together carry a unit from a multilevel bill of materials to a serial number an engineer can look up years later. Brainvire configures that, and builds the rest.
Manufacturing, Inventory, Quality, PLM, Purchase, Helpdesk, Field Service and Repairs on one database, with a serial number on the finished unit and a multilevel bill of materials underneath.
Makers of electronic assemblies, instruments, industrial equipment and capital machinery who configure to order, revise designs often, and support units for years.
No connector to an EDA or CAD tool, and no automatic capture of optical-inspection or functional-test data. Both are integrations, scoped in writing first.
Small implementations 8 to 12 weeks, mid-market 12 to 24 weeks, multi-plant rollouts 6 to 12 months.
/ Before you change anything
Does your operation look like any of this?
Patterns we see where engineering, the shop floor and service each keep their own version.
A build stops for one component
The shortage turns up on the floor, not in a plan, and the buyer hears once the line has stopped.
Nobody is certain which revision was built
The drawing was updated, the bill of materials was not, and two units left built to different designs.
A unit in the field cannot be identified
A customer reads out a serial number and nobody can say what went into it or when it shipped.
Warranty and repair live in a mailbox
Returns are agreed over email, parts are pulled without a document, and nobody counts what came back.

/ The work itself
What does Brainvire actually configure in Odoo for an electronics or machinery maker?
Odoo ships a capable Manufacturing, Inventory, Quality and PLM suite, and no industry module for either sector. Work orders and routings are covered on Odoo Manufacturing (MRP), warehouse operations on Odoo Inventory and WMS.
| Odoo default | What Brainvire changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Finished units tracked by nothing | Serial number tracking on, set per operation type, with numbers assigned as the unit is built and printed on the delivery slip | A serial number returns a history, not a search |
| One flat bill of materials | Multilevel BoMs, a sublevel BoM per board nested into the parent. Odoo’s own example is a circuit board inside a keyboard | The board is planned and built as its own item |
| Revisions kept in a drawing folder | Engineering change orders in PLM (Enterprise only), effective now or at a date, with every version kept. Design files attach; Odoo does not read them | You can name the revision a unit was built to |
| Configure-to-order rebuilt on every quote | Attributes and variants created dynamically, optional products on the quotation, a variant-specific BoM behind each | A configured order becomes a build, not a retype |
| Engineer-to-order work with no route | Odoo has no engineer-to-order application. Replenish on order makes the sales order raise the build and link back, with lead times per component. A per-order BoM is configuration, not a module | Every one-off build traces to its order |
| Inspection recorded on paper | Quality control points at a chosen operation, Measure checks against a norm and tolerance, a quality alert when one fails. Quality is Enterprise only | A suspect unit stops where it was found |
| Long-lead parts ordered late | The master production schedule for long-lead items, reordering rules for the rest, commitments as a blanket order matched on bill control | Allocation is planned, not discovered on the floor |
| Contract assembly invisible until it returns | Subcontracting routes, so components at a contract assembler stay visible as your stock and the board returns against a real document | Work at a subcontractor is stock you can still see |
| Service contracts, spare parts and site visits by phone | Field Service tasks that record parts used from the catalog, closed on a worksheet on site, with response commitments as SLA policies from Helpdesk. Field Service and Helpdesk are Enterprise only. YEK Engineering, a commercial kitchen solutions provider, is digitizing field service with us on Odoo | The part fitted on site leaves stock and reaches the invoice |
| Test data with nowhere to go | Odoo ships no optical-inspection or functional-test feed. A measurement tool on an IoT box posts a reading onto a control point, and IoT is Enterprise only; wider capture is the integration we are building for this electronics manufacturer | You know up front which part is a build |
Feature names follow the Odoo 18 documentation. PLM, Quality, Field Service, Helpdesk and IoT are Odoo Enterprise applications and are not in Odoo Community. Rows stating that Odoo ships nothing were checked by reading the documentation pages themselves, not its search index.
/ Automation, where it pays
Where does automation earn its place in an electronics or machinery business?
Four places it pays for itself.
Production data read off the line
For a global electronics manufacturer we are wiring supervisory control and data acquisition hardware into Odoo, so it receives production data and pass or fail test results before dispatch.
Incoming orders read by an agent
American Lighting received hundreds of purchase orders a day as support tickets in mixed formats. Our agentic pipeline finds the document, extracts it, maps it to customer and product records, and routes only real exceptions to a person.
Readings taken by the instrument
A gauge on an IoT box posts its own reading onto a quality control point, so the check records what the instrument saw rather than what someone typed.
Component invoices read, not typed
Component invoices are digitized into draft bills with vendor, dates, taxes and lines filled in, then matched against the order and what goods-in received.
What has to connect to an electronics or machinery maker’s ERP?
Odoo does not replace the design tools.E-commerce
Spares often sell direct while the machines do not. The storefront reads Odoo stock and the serial number of what was bought, so a part is ordered against its unit.
and moreERP Systems
Leaving Tally, Sage, QuickBooks or an older Odoo need not lose history. We map accounts, suppliers, open orders, bills of materials and serial history record by record, then reconcile before cut-over. Where a system stays, we integrate instead, as Completion Products is doing with MES.
and moreEDI & Marketplace
Contract manufacturers and OEM customers send schedules, not orders. Each format maps into one sales order structure with an exception queue, so a release becomes demand rather than an email.
and moreShipping Gateways
Machines ship on pallets, boards ship in boxes. Carrier accounts and labels sit on the delivery order, and serial numbers print on the slip so a customer can quote one back.
and moreTaxation
Sell into enough states or emirates and treatment follows the ship-to, not head office. Fiscal positions cover most of it; Avalara or TaxJar take over once maintenance is the larger job.
and morePayment Gateways
Distributors settle on terms and direct buyers on the order. Both land against one receivable.
and moreOther Integrations
EDA and mechanical CAD, test and inspection systems, MES, telematics and BI dashboards all touch the operation, and none ship a connector. Each gets a defined interface and a reconciliation.
and more/ Delivery
How does an Odoo rollout run in an electronics or machinery business?
Scope is driven by how the product is specified, how deep the bill of materials goes, and what you owe after the sale. Small implementations run 8 to 12 weeks, mid-market 12 to 24 weeks, multi-plant rollouts 6 to 12 months — our estimates, not Odoo’s. The method in full is on the implementation methodology page.
Discovery
We sit with an engineer, a planner and a service manager, follow one product from released design to warranty claim, and list where a revision or serial is recorded.
Design
BoM levels, the change-control route, serial policy, control points and the integration map are agreed in writing, and so is what Odoo will not ship.
Build and data
Configuration first, then the custom work, then item masters, BoMs, open orders and existing serial history loaded into a test database.
Pilot and go-live
One product family goes live first, proven by rebuilding its BoM and reconciling stock against your current system. The rest follow on a period boundary.
/ Accelerators
Start from a ready-made Odoo package.
A fixed-price Odoo package built on real projects, so you go live sooner with less risk.
/ Odoo, on the record
Where have we done this for electronics and machinery makers?
Three engagements on the record, all in flight, and we say so rather than borrow a result.

/ Comparison
Odoo, or an electronics-specific ERP?
A specialist starts ahead on engineering. Odoo starts ahead on everything after the design is released.
| Criterion | An electronics-specific ERP | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Design data and change control | A design vault, item masters driven from the CAD or EDA tool | Change orders against the BoM, design files attached but not read |
| Serial and revision traceability | Built in, with as-built records per unit | Serial numbers, a traceability report and stored BoM versions |
| Test and inspection data | Native connectors to inspection and test equipment | Control points, Measure checks and an IoT instrument reading. A wider feed is a build |
| Everything that is not production | A separate system for CRM, purchasing, field service or the web store | One database already runs them, on the same serial numbers |
| Cost of a change | A vendor request, then a release cycle | Configuration in one place, code only where the gap is real |
Choose the specialist if design data, as-built records and test capture are the daily job: it wins the first three rows outright, and we would say so. Choose Odoo if the business is wider than engineering. Brainvire resells no specialist ERP. See also Odoo versus SAP Business One.
/ Questions manufacturers ask
Odoo for electronics and machinery FAQs.
Does Odoo have an electronics or machinery module?
No. Odoo ships no application for either sector, and the word machinery does appear in its documentation — Maintenance uses it as an example of equipment on a production line, never as an application. What a maker actually uses is Manufacturing, Inventory, Quality, PLM, Maintenance, Purchase, Helpdesk, Field Service and Repairs, configured together, with serial numbers on the finished unit and a multilevel bill of materials underneath it.
Can Odoo track every unit by serial number?
Yes. Turn on Lots and Serial Numbers in Inventory, then decide per operation type whether new numbers may be created or only existing ones used. Serial numbers can print on delivery slips, which is what a customer quotes back on a return, and the traceability report shows a unit’s full history.
How does Odoo handle a multi-level bill of materials?
By nesting. A subassembly gets its own bill of materials and then appears as a component on the parent. Odoo’s own example is a printed circuit board inside a custom keyboard. Build from the bottom up, and check component status on the manufacturing order before releasing it.
How are engineering changes controlled in Odoo?
Through engineering change orders in the PLM app, which is Enterprise only. An ECO records the change, routes it for approval, and applies it to the production bill of materials now or on a set date. Every version is kept, so you can trace which revision was live on a given day.
Does Odoo integrate with our EDA or CAD system?
Not natively. PLM lets you attach design files to a bill of materials, but it does not read a schematic, a netlist or a CAD assembly, and no connector to a design tool ships with Odoo. Turning a released design into an Odoo bill of materials is an integration we scope and build.
Can Odoo capture test or inspection results automatically?
Partly. A quality control point raises a check at a chosen operation, and a Measure check records a reading against a norm and tolerance. A measurement tool on an IoT box can post that reading itself. A feed from optical inspection or a functional tester is not shipped, and has to be built.
How do warranty claims and RMAs work in Odoo?
There is no RMA application. A Helpdesk ticket with after-sales services enabled can issue a refund, start a return as a reverse transfer, raise a repair order, or plan a Field Service visit, all from the ticket. Warranty entitlement is a field and a rule we configure against the serial number.
How long does an electronics or machinery implementation take?
Small implementations run 8 to 12 weeks, mid-market 12 to 24 weeks, and multi-plant rollouts 6 to 12 months. Version upgrades run 3 to 8 weeks. Custom work for a design-system interface or a test-data feed is estimated separately. These are our estimates, not Odoo figures.
