Odoo Community vs Enterprise: the differences that decide it
Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition, licensed under LGPLv3. Odoo Enterprise is the same core under a subscription licence that adds Studio, the full Accounting app, Odoo’s hosting, support and version upgrades. Brainvire, an Odoo Gold Partner, settles which one your processes need.
Odoo Community is the open-source edition, licensed under LGPLv3. Odoo Enterprise is the same core under the Odoo Enterprise Edition License v1.0, which requires a valid subscription for the correct number of users and adds Studio, the mobile apps, the full Accounting app, Odoo’s hosting, functional support and version upgrades.
Community is free to license: no subscription, any number of users. It is not free to run. You provide the servers, backups, security updates, implementation, training and upgrade work, or you pay someone to do it for you.
Community carries Invoicing, CRM, Sales, Point of Sale, Inventory, Manufacturing, Purchase, Project and eCommerce. Enterprise adds Accounting, Studio, Payroll, Documents, Sign, Helpdesk, Field Service, Quality, PLM, Barcode and Marketing Automation.
A Community database can be moved to Enterprise in place by installing the web_enterprise module and entering a subscription code. Odoo’s upgrade service covers version changes, not the edition switch itself.

Which edition should you choose?
Four situations, four answers. Work from the app you cannot run without, not from the feature grid.
Community fits a single-entity operation
One legal entity, invoicing rather than statutory accounting, payroll outside Odoo, and a team that can host and patch a server. Community still carries CRM, Sales, Point of Sale, Inventory, Manufacturing, Purchase, Project, Website and eCommerce.
Enterprise fits when one missing app is load-bearing
Statutory accounting, payroll, helpdesk, field service, quality or PLM. If any one of those has to run inside Odoo, the edition question is already answered. Studio, the mobile apps and the upgrade service come with it.
The licence decides more than the app list
LGPLv3 lets you run, modify and host Odoo freely. The Enterprise licence requires a subscription for the correct number of users and forbids redistributing the software. Which one you sign changes who may run your build.
Start on Community and move up later
Odoo documents the switch: back up the database, install the web_enterprise module and enter the subscription code. The database comes with you. Custom code written to replace an Enterprise app you later switch on does not, so decide before you build around the gap.

How does the edition decision get settled?
Four stages, a named owner at each, a written answer at the end. The implementation that follows runs 8 to 12 weeks for small rollouts, 12 to 24 weeks for mid-market and 6 to 12 months for enterprise.
List the phase-one apps
We write down the apps a mapped process cannot run without. The edition follows that list. You provide a process owner per flow; we bring the functional consultant.
Test the gaps on a real database
Each gap is run against standard Odoo in both editions, and recorded as closed by configuration, needing Studio or an Enterprise app, or needing code.
Settle hosting and the upgrade posture
Self-hosted, Odoo Online or Odoo.sh. Who holds the backups, who applies bugfix updates, and who runs the upgrade when the version changes. Hosting and edition are one decision.
Decide, then build or switch
A new build starts on the chosen edition. An existing Community database is switched in place with the web_enterprise module and a subscription code.

Is Odoo Community really free?
Free to license is not the same as free to run. Four items stay on your side of the line whichever edition you pick.
Free to license
Odoo describes Community as its free and open-source version under the GNU LGPLv3. You may download it, run it, modify it and host it without a subscription, for any number of users.
Not free to host
Community is self-hosted. Servers, storage, backups, monitoring, security updates and the person on call are yours to provide or to buy.
Not free to implement
Process design, configuration, data migration, integrations, testing and training take the same effort on either edition. The licence is rarely the largest line.
Not free to upgrade
An Enterprise subscription includes Odoo’s upgrade service. On Community you schedule the upgrade, port every custom module and test it yourself.
Odoo calls Community “the free and open-source version of the software, licensed under the GNU LGPLv3” and Enterprise “the shared source version… including functional support, upgrades, and hosting” in its database management documentation. Self-hosted installs apply their own bugfix updates; Odoo applies them for you on its cloud platforms.

What is the difference between Odoo Community and Enterprise?
Community is the open-source edition, licensed under LGPLv3, and you host it yourself. Is Odoo Community free?
Yes, to license. Odoo publishes Community under the GNU LGPLv3 and calls it the free and open-source version, with no subscription and no user limit. Running it is not free: you provide the servers, backups, security updates, implementation, training and every upgrade, or you pay a partner to provide them for you.
Does Odoo Community include Accounting?
No. Community ships Invoicing, which creates customer invoices, sends them, records payments and handles vendor bills. Odoo's documentation contrasts that with the Accounting app, a comprehensive solution that adds standard financial reports, bank reconciliation, budgets and asset management. Accounting is listed under Enterprise on Odoo's own edition comparison.
Is Odoo Studio available in Community?
No, Studio is an Enterprise app. It adds fields, changes views and builds automation rules, approval rules and PDF reports without writing code. Odoo's upgrade service agreement covers Studio customizations for as long as Studio stays installed and the subscription stays active. In Community, the same changes are written and maintained in code.
Can Odoo Community run on Odoo.sh or Odoo Online?
No. Odoo lists hosting as an Enterprise entitlement, so Odoo Online and Odoo.sh come with a subscription. Community is self-hosted, on your own servers or your own cloud account, with you or your implementation partner responsible for deployment, backups, monitoring and applying bugfix updates to the source.
Can we switch from Odoo Community to Enterprise later?
Yes, and the database comes with you. Odoo documents the steps: back up the Community database, stop the server, install the web_enterprise module, restart, then enter the Enterprise subscription code you receive by email. The edition switch is not part of Odoo's database upgrade service, which covers moving between versions.
Who supports an Odoo Community deployment?
Your implementation partner, the Odoo community forum and the public source repository. Odoo's own unlimited functional support is listed under Enterprise on its edition comparison. Brainvire supports Community builds as an Odoo Gold Partner, but no part of a Community deployment carries a service level agreement from Odoo itself.
What happens at upgrade time on each edition?
With Odoo Enterprise, upgrading a database to the most recent version is included, under an agreement covering standard applications and Studio customizations. On Community you schedule the upgrade, port every custom module to the target version and test it yourself. Odoo provides standard support for each major version for three years.
Does Odoo Community have a mobile app?
Odoo's edition comparison lists the Android and iOS mobile apps under Enterprise, and lists the desktop web browser for both editions, so Community users work in a browser. Check the current comparison before deciding: the app list changes between versions far more often than the two licences do.
Which edition suits a group with several legal entities?
Usually Enterprise. Consolidated reporting depends on the full Accounting app, and filing in each country depends on the fiscal localization packages, both of which Odoo lists on the Enterprise side. A single entity with simpler needs can still run Community, but a group that has to consolidate rarely can.
